Pirate Cat Memorial

Field review by the editors.

Carmel, Indiana

Pirate Cat was a fluffy orange and white tabby who was technically owned by Indianapolis resident Amanda Cancilla, but who preferred to wander the surrounding neighborhoods and the Monon Trail, where he "spent most of his time posing for pictures and encouraging bikers, runners, and walkers," according to the inscription on his black granite monument.

Pirate Cat died of kidney disease on April 6, 2020, and on October 24, 2021, his admirers unveiled his impressive trailside memorial. It entombs some of his ashes -- the rest were spread along the Trail -- and is topped by a life-size, full-color statue of the people-friendly feline.

"This gentle skallywag will be sorely missed."
