Ronald Reagan Berlin Wall
San Bernardino, California
A solitary slab of the notorious Berlin Wall, 12.5-feet high, stands on an otherwise empty patch of grass, except for a sign: Ronald Reagan Park. Reagan's portrait, painted on the street-facing side of the slab, was not a Berlin-era tribute: it was added after the slab arrived in San Bernardino by local artist Robb Mc Dermott.
The slab was never meant to be this lonely. When it was unveiled in February 2011 there were big plans for Ronald Reagan Park, including a Reagan statue and a walkway with a series of Reagan quotes. Councilman Chas Kelly said at the slab's dedication that, "It's going to be the No. 1 educational tool for the Inland Empire."
But over a decade has passed, and the slab is all that's there. Even its original inscription, "Mr. Gorbachev: Tear down this wall!" has been painted over, perhaps by nervous officials who wanted to nix any suggestion of bad behavior toward the slab.
