Fire Station Sculpture
Fergus Falls, Minnesota
The sculpture atop the brick-framed sign for the Fergus Falls fire department is small. But it caught our attention, in an area sprinkled with a number of large scale works, mostly by the same artist. Steve Jaenisch (1940-2014) made the town's iconic otter, the stylish goose, and the surveyor's transom at the nearby Continental Divide (Big Chief cafe).
A skeletal metal house is engulfed in flames. Two firefighters arc their hose streams at the inferno, while a third firefighter in an oxygen mask rescues a little girl. The girl's face appears already ravaged by burns, but that's just the sculpting style... and she's still holding her doll, so how bad could it be? A bonus: The firefighter carries her pet dog to safety.
A couple of station inhabitants couldn't provide details on the sculpture, but clearly it inspires vigilance.
