World's Largest Belt Buckle
Abilene, Kansas
Built in seven months by Abilene welder Jason Lahr, the World's Largest Belt Buckle reestablished Abilene's credibility as a cowtown, and surpassed previous buckle behemoths in Montana, Missouri, and North Dakota. It was completed on December 21, 2022. The buckle's dimensions were kept secret until its unveiling to thwart potential competitors, although at almost 20 feet wide and 14 feet high it would tempt only the most obsessively serious rivals.
Lahr designed the buckle himself, inlaying it with blue quartz to create a Chisholm Trail Longhorn head surrounded by tributes to Abilene historical worthies such as Dwight Eisenhower and Wild Bill Hickok.
The buckle is mounted on a scaffold, and a spiral staircase behind it leads to an elevated platform. People can stand on it and pose as if the gargantuan buckle is affixed to a belt holding up their pants.
