Governor #24: Frank Leroy Farrar
Pierre, South Dakota
In office 1969-1971
Frank Farrar could run, but he couldn't hide from the wrath of South Dakotans, who voted him out of office after one term because he had raised the state sales tax.
Farrar's statue, sculpted by James Michael Maher, captures Farrar in motion, which he often was, even though he'd been partly hobbled since high school by a football injury. Farrar kept running, literally, and participated in iron man competitions and triathlons into his mid-eighties along with his wife, who was a Senior Olympian. Farrar paused long enough to attend his statue's unveiling in 2013, and eventually ran out of time at age 92.
