Bo the Bison: 37 Feet Tall
Custer, South Dakota
The Dahl Brothers of South Dakota have perfected the chainsaw art of carving wood into shingle-like pieces that are then assembled into giant creatures. They first created a big Bigfoot in Keystone, then a huge Smokey Bear in Hill City, then an immense jackalope in Wall.
Next on their list was this giant buffalo in Custer, named "Bo the Bison," assembled in April 2023. Standing 37 feet tall, the shaggy American buffalo is a good subject for the Dahl's shingle art. This one wears bib overalls, holds a flagpole flying the Stars and Stripes, and has a serious expression (buffalo are not known for smiling).
Despite his all-wood construction, the Dahl Brothers say that Bo -- like all of their colossi -- should stand for many years.
