Retro-Robot Head

Field review by the editors.

Columbia, South Carolina

Unveiled just as the pandemic hit in 2020, "Green Eyes" was built out of recycled junk by local artist Clark Ellefson. The oxidizing domed metal head, ten feet high, sports silver buck teeth, jutting green lightbulb eyes -- which can glow after dark -- and spikes for hair, which are accessorized with lit sparklers on July 4th and Christmas lights during the holidays.

According to Ellefson, the head is only the top of a much larger robot that lies buried beneath the surface, part of an ancient, lost race of giant robots that once roamed South Carolina.
