Hoodah: 15-Foot-High Troll

Field review by the editors.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Unlike the Thomas Dambo trolls that have sprouted like wooden weeds across the USA, Hoodah is unique: built out of lumber by furniture-maker Garth Franklin -- who has a shop on the same block as the troll -- in October 2023. Sitting on an abandoned railroad track, Hoodah is still 15 feet high. The troll is so big that it couldn't fit into Franklin's shop, so it had to be built outdoors in sections -- quickly, to maintain the surprise -- and then assembled with a glue gun.

According to Franklin, Hoodah is the guardian and protector of the neighborhood, an old industrial area of Salt Lake City that has had a long history of building things, although until now nothing quite like Hoodah.
