Mosaic Accordion Maestro
San Antonio, Texas
A very tall man with stainless steel legs, wearing a shirt and playing an accordion -- both covered with colorful tiles -- stands on a stretch of Old Highway 90 once known for its bars and their accordion players. Titled "Orgullo Tejano" (Texas Pride), it was sculpted by by Luis Lopez in 2024. Eastern Europeans brought accordions to South Texas, and fieldworkers from Mexico used them to play Tejano Conjunto music.
The squiggly thing in the man's mouth is not a whistle; it's a Mesoamerican scroll, an artistic flourish added by Lopez.
