Volcano, California

A helpful directory sign points to key sights and landmarks in tiny Volcano, California (pop. 115) in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Once a booming gold rush town (briefly considered as a California state capital location), Volcano makes it easy to find "Old Abe" the cannon, the nearby Indian grinding rocks, a stunning show cave, and public bathrooms.

Volcano is home to the Sizemore Country Store, a 19th century business built from native limestone and local bricks and touted as the state's oldest operating general store (since 1852).

There's a wooded park with picnic tables, various plaques on boulders, and the charming Cobblestone Theater, with live outdoor performances in the Volcano Amphitheatre in the summer, and indoor shows during the colder months.
