Lemont Massacre Mural
Lemont, Illinois
In May 1885 limestone quarrymen in Lemont, fed up with low pay and harsh working conditions, went on strike. The governor called in the state militia, who attacked the strikers with rifle fire, sabers, and bayonets at the spot where, in 2014, a mural was painted to memorialize the clash. Three strikers died, women and children were clubbed. Union organizers christened it "The Lemont Massacre," and credited it as the spark that led to the even deadlier Haymarket Massacre in Chicago the following year, which kickstarted the labor movement in America.
