Falling Meteor No. 2

Field review by the editors.

Winslow, Arizona

Jerry Peart is a professional artist whose sculptures feature a bright palette of colors and abstract shapes. One of his earliest, created in 1976, was donated by his parents to his hometown. "Falling Meteor No. 2," 14 feet high and over 15 feet long, is Peart's version of the giant meteorite that crashed into the Arizona desert just east of Winslow, thousands of years ago. The sculpture has a place of honor outside of Winslow's municipal building, and is cheery and ambiguous enough not to terrify the town's inhabitants with its apocalyptic inspiration.
