Ghost Town Founded by African Americans
With a tiny, staffed visitor center (that shows a 37-minute movie about the site), more than a dozen reconstructed buildings, and a rich history, this mostly unknown state park deserves better.

Fascinating place. Great exhibits, nice staff!
[Kurt, 08/02/2015]Restoration of buildings seems to be complete, much better than the two pictures. High interest for history buffs.

Allen Allensworth was born as a slave in Louisville, Kentucky in 1842. He established this remote California town in 1908 with four other African American settlers. By 1914 there were 200 residents. A number of buildings remain and are maintained by the state parks system, including Colonel Allensworth's home, furnished as if it was still 1912.
