Trona Pinnacles
Giant "once under the deep ocean sculptures" are now visible to anybody willing to make the 5-10 mile drive into the unpaved desert side road. This drive is another adventure because you feel like you are driving on marshmallows -- and if you get out and walk, you will understand what I am talking about.
This is one of California's most unusual geological desert landscapes. You will think you are visiting Mars.
[MIkka, 03/28/2011]Trona Pinnacles
The Trona Pinnacles are some of the most unique geological features in the California Desert Conservation Area. The unusual landscape consists of more than 500 tufa spires, some as high as 140 feet, rising from the bed of the Searles Dry Lake basin. The pinnacles vary in size and shape from short and squat to tall and thin, and are composed primarily of calcium carbonate (tufa). The Trona Pinnacles have been featured in many commercials and movies. Caution - after rain, road may be impassable.
