Wilmington, Massachusetts: Baldwin Apple Monument
Marks the site of the first Baldwin Apple tree. Its fans claim that this is the only monument in the world that includes a statue of an apple. It was erected in 1895.

- I-93 exit 38. Drive west on Hwy 129/Lowell St. for 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Cross St., then bear right at the first intersection onto Butters Row. Drive a half-mile until the road ends. Turn left onto Chestnut St. Drive a quarter-mile. You'll see a sign for the monument on the right.

A monument marks where the Baldwin apple was discovered in 1740. It is the only statue in the world commemorating an apple, and appeared in a volume of Ripley's Believe It or Not. The statue is beside the Butters House, the second oldest house in Wilmington, built about 1682.

The five-foot-tall stone pedestal has a carving of a pumpkin-size Baldwin apple on top. It originally credited Samuel Thompson (not Loammi Baldwin) with discovering the apple, and it took 80 years to change its inscription (The Thompsons paid for the monument). April 2019: Photo added.
