Passing by the Mitchell Shoe Tree site, it is no longer there. The tree is downed and a pile of burned wood.

I'm not sure where these shoe trees come from. Must have some interesting seeds.

All those shoes!!

Another shoe tree has sprouted in the John Day fossil beds! Driving east from Mitchell, Oregon, we spotted this fine specimen on the right side of the road. It sports a nice variety of rubber and cowboy boots as well as kids' and ladies shoes. Some of the shoes have spread to the neighboring trees - looks like there is a shoe tree forest in the making here.
The shoe tree is located on US route 26, near mile marker 89, half way between Mitchell and the Sheep Rock unit of the John Day fossil beds (aka picture gorge).

This dead tree sits on the north shoulder of the highway. Sadly, the tree is losing its limbs one by one, and for every pair of shoes in the tree, we found two on the ground.
