Maybe not as scary for you, but we saw his bow-legged visage late at night, and we were really tired.

It's easy to find the cowboy statue.

Tex, Scary Giant Cowboy

My mother or father, Janet and Jerry Boice, took this photo of "Tex" on their honeymoon in 1956 at the Texas Cowboy Cafe in Dalhart. I suspect it was my mother because she had an awesome camera, an Argus C3, that she/we continued to use at least through the 1980s. My parents were married in Des Moines in Dec. 1955, and, presumably after Christmas, drove to Tucson to visit relatives who had relocated to Arizona.

My mother passed away last month at age 91. We've been cleaning her house, and I've scanned lots of photos/slides/negatives. My family often took summer driving vacations from Tucson (where we lived) to Iowa, where my parents were from. Of course, a couple memorable roadside attractions, for us, were the Plow in the Oak Tree (back when most of the plow could still be seen) near Exira, Iowa, my mother's hometown, and the Danish Windmill in nearby Elk Horn.

"Tex" The Cowboy Statue

Just spoke with the current owner, Elliot Crabtree -- his father bought it and moved it to Conlen 50-60 years ago. It had previously stood at the entrance to another restaurant that he thinks was called "Cattleman's" at the intersection in Dalhart, TX.

Scary Giant Cowboy Statue

I believe the statue straddled the doorway of the former Cowboy Cafe building and was originally at 4614 US 54, Dalhart, TX. I have a 1958 souvenir tea cup from the place, and home movies my grandparents made.

Dalhart is down the road about 20 miles from the cowboy's current home in Conlen.
