Gaffney, South Carolina: Peachoid Water Tower

This giant watersphere is shaped and painted to look like a peach -- but some still think that it resembles a big butt.

The one million gallon peach.

Voted "Steel Tank of the Year" in 1981, the Peachoid has been scrupulously maintained by its fruit-happy town.

From the south it looks like a delicious peach. We couldn't figure out why people called it "the butt in the sky." Then we went around to the other side, which quickly replaced that mystery with another: what led this town to build something that looks like a giant butt in the sky?

The Peachoid Water Tower is also known throughout the region as "The Peach-Butt," and is used as a common reference point for interstate travelers.

Peachoid - A Different Viewpoint

This photo was taken on Thursday, April 11, 2002, (obviously) of the Gaffney, South Carolina peach/water tower. A branch of the Fatz Cafe restaurant chain has been built right in its shadow. Personally I'm torn between disappointment that the pristine view of the peach has been disrupted, and the thrill of eating really good garlic bread while I look at it.

The Peachoid - A new view

I did get a good picture of the Peachoid's 'butt'. What I didn't realize is the tank is actually shaped like a butt, it's not just an illusion using paint and shadows. Gaffney is serious about their Peachoid!!

The peachoid was also the 1981 Steel Tank of the Year. Oh ... and the area around and just below the Peachoid is a park where you can sit and ponder the peachoid.
