After visiting the Auburn Giant Statues, we drove east to Alta Sierra Biblical Gardens. There was an older gentleman in the picnic area by the parking lot watching us as we started through the gardens. There is a brook and lovely statues throughout the garden. As we walked the gentleman followed us (felt like stalking really) then he caught up and talked about the garden and the different paths, then left us in peace. We followed the path and returned to the parking lot where the gentleman was waiting. Found out he is the caretaker and has had problems with kids damaging the gardens. Anyway neat place to visit, but stay on the paths!
[Carl Ambrose, 12/14/2003]The Biblical Gardens is off of CA Route 49 just south of Alta Sierra in unincorporated Nevada County. It is north of Auburn and south of Grass Valley. From 49, take Auburn Road (marked with a green and white road sign) and from there follow the wooden "Biblical Garden" signs. The Biblical Garden is open every day, weather permitting, and includes a beautiful outdoor chapel and baptismal pool. Hand-built statues (some very large) and verse tell the story as you make your way up to Calvary and the Ascension. You can also meditate and pray as you walk the Chartres style labyrinth. Contrary to the rumors, the Biblical Garden is alive and well maintained.
