I remember my mother talking about this horse. Nordlicht was a good stud but a decidedly bad horse and it was doubted that Hitler or anyone else not a professional rider had ever been on his back. Mattingly had to raise the fence three times as the horse kept jumping it, and being a stallion the animal was dangerous. Casual paddock visitors were Not Welcome, as even in those times of few lawsuits Mattingly had no desire for trouble. The U.S. Army deserves credit for transporting the beautiful but mean creature to the States, as it could not have been an easy job.
