Carlsbad Caverns

Fucking awesome !!! The drive up the mountain is just magnificent, Gods beautiful nature. Sitting there in the evening and watching over 400,000 bats fly out amazing. And then there is walking through the cave 750 feet below ground, Gods beautiful nature. Dont miss out on any of these activities. Going to try to post a few pictures. [Roadtrip18, 09/14/2024]

The cafeteria and gift shop at the cavern floor is closed, perhaps just for the season. The book store gift shop, right outside the elevators back up, is cheaper than the main gift shop, but with a limited selection.

The hike down is tricky but paved, so just be wary of wet surfaces. Tour groups can get big and the path can get narrow, so be aware of your surroundings before stopping for photos.

Beautiful surrounding area and breathtaking views inside Carlsbad Caverns. A lot of walking, with few bathrooms inside the caverns.

The Carlsbad Caverns elevator has been down for several months. It's a fairly strenuous hike 720 feet down and back up, but doable if you hike at all. If can't hike, suggest calling first to see if the elevator is working.

[Joyce Mccaslin, 02/19/2016]

After several unsuccessful repair attempts, the elevator was finally restored to working order in mid-August 2016.
