There are 178 steps down to the viewing platform from the visitors center. They are much easier to descend than they are to ascend.

[Mike Larson, 04/29/2016]Take the boardwalk-style staircase partially down the side of the gorge to get the most majestic view of the bridge. You'll find a sidewalk to the stairs next to the visitor center. Be forewarned: There are 178 stairs! Descending is a cinch. Going back up could become a problem. They've provided landings with benches, so you can catch your breath and enjoy the surroundings, but I suggest you hydrate yourself beforehand. Just in case.
