[Tony Austinson, 09/08/2022]Giant Replica Runestone
History's Skid Marks, August 12: This was the official dedication day in 1951 for the giant, replica Runestone in Alexandria, Minnesota. The 18-ton rock, chiseled with ancient Scandinavian symbols, commemorated the return to Alexandria of a real, and much smaller, Runestone, discovered nearby in 1898, and now enshrined in the town museum. By some accounts the real Runestone -- which might be a hoax instead of a future-divining slab left by 14th century Norsemen, was discovered in August. Others said that it was actually unearthed in November. But no one wants to unveil anything outdoors in Minnesota in November.
