Murfreesboro, Tennessee: World's Largest Cedar Bucket

The original 1887 bucket burned up, a victim of arson in 2005. A new giant bucket appeared in Oct. 2011. It is six feet tall and holds 1,566 gallons -- just like the original.

World's Largest Red Cedar Bucket

There is a small pioneer village set up near downtown Murfreesboro, TN called Cannonsburg, and it's home to the world's largest red cedar bucket. Three friends and I went there last year for a psychology project, and we all agreed that the whole place was remarkably interesting. The highlight is the cedar bucket, which we all hugged numerous times, as well as the original steps to the Rutherford County courthouse, an antique fire engine, and a battle diorama using green army men to symbolize the soldiers in the Civil War.

As an interesting tidbit about the bucket, when it was originally built and displayed, it was filled with beer to prove that it was leak proof.

World's Largest Cedar Bucket

I was excited to find out that Smyrna, the town next to mine, has the largest cedar bucket, but imagine my surprise that my own hometown actually has the bucket. I have not seen the bucket, and I have not been to the pioneer village that it is rumored to reside. I am still proud to say that commonly misspelled Murfreesboro, TN, geographical center of our fine state, has produced the world's largest cedar bucket. I am glad I can represent my fair town and elevate it above Smyrna which wouldn't amount to much if it didn't have the Nissan plant to help it out.

Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village is located near Highway 70/41 Southeast of Nashville. You can also take Interstate 24 to Murfreesboro and completely bypass the town of Smyrna. Though you do have to look at their eyesore known as The I-24 Expo Center. p.s. please try not to let any Smyrnites know I typed this.

Smyrna is also Home of the Boy Hero of the Confederacy. Sam Davis, caught behind enemy lines, would rather be hanged than betray the source of information he had.
