Terlingua, Texas: Clay Henry - Famous Beer-Drinking Dead Goat

Clay Henry III, beer drinking goat and mayor of the west Texas border town of Lajitas, was attacked by local Jim Bob Hargrove and castrated. Hargrove committed the heinous deed after seeing the goat drinking beer on a Sunday, when the area's blue laws prevent the sale of alcohol to humans....

Okay, so this is three years late... Clay Henry Jr., beer drinking goat of Lajitas, Texas, is dead....

I was in Lajitas, TX, in February, 1999. It might help travelers to know that the trading post is in an RV & tent campground which they might want to stay in as I did. Apparently, Clay Henry, Jr. died in November, 1996, after the Presidential elections, at the age of 12 (which is average for a goat). Clay, Jr. is now replaced with Billy the Kid and two younger companions who actually are kids. Billy seems to be full grown.

I was not able to see how many beers Billy could drink in a day, but I did give him one (I had to save a couple for myself). He and his goat buddies do seem to really enjoy dried peaches, too. I have no idea how many they could eat of those either or if dried fruit will make them live longer. I am also surprised that Republicans did not blame President Clinton for the death of Clay Henry, Jr. I wonder if Ken Starr investigated that, too.

I saw the beer drinking goat in Lajitias. I fed him seven beers. And bought a bumper sticker -- the only souvenir there -- that said "Lajitas, Texas home of Clay Henry Jr."
