The Duncan Cedar

The big cedar is not gone. The previous submission saying so was referring to a tree in the Olympic National Park on the rainforest access road. It was felled in a storm. The Duncan Cedar is alive and well. Visited it today.

World's Largest Western Red Cedar Tree

This tree was destroyed in a storm in March 2014. There's still a piece standing but most of it is laying dead on the ground.

The Duncan Cedar: World's Largest Western Red Cedar Tree

Seeing the "big cedar tree" sign along Highway 101, I was intrigued and decided to see what it was all about. After driving to it, I was a bit underwhelmed. Billed as "the world's largest western red cedar," it appears to have seen its better days. Nevertheless, it is relatively easy to reach, and features a raised walkway that allows visitors to walk around its stump, err trunk. Unfortunately I saw nothing there to explain who Duncan, the tree's namesake, is.
