Dubois, Wyoming: Ride the Jackalope

A big, stuffed jackrabbit with antlers and a saddle indoors, and a similar fiberglass one outdoors. Classic photo-ops.

Ride a Jackalope.

Giant Jackalope

A tipster in 2007 wrote that she wasn't sure how much longer the Giant Jackalope would be around. I am pleased -- no, delighted -- to report that he's doing just fine. You can still take your picture with him. The gas station now boasts "The World's Largest Jackalope Exhibit!" and he even has a giant fiberglass friend out front.

Giant Jackalope

Astounding...well worth the 800 miles out-of-my-way drive. Business is up for sale for $375,000. Not sure how much longer it may be there. The folks there were great and even helped take pictures.

Mountable Jackalope

My wife and I were vacationing in Jackson, WY and Yellowstone. On the drive up from Colorado, after seeing much of the desolate but beautiful Wyoming countryside, we were nearing Jackon, and needed to buy some gas. We were in the small town of Dubois, WY, and we found a gas station there on the main strip, with a sign that pointed out that they had a Jackalope. We gassed up, and then went inside.

We laughed as we saw the large, saddled Jackalope, standing there in front of the U.S. flag. Jennifer was pregnant, so she didn't mount it on the advice of her physician husband. But seeing a photo-op, I had to "ride" the Jackalope, so I paid the $1, and jumped on and we took pictures. In the store is a Jackalope museum, as well. In addition, I got a ticket that said "I rode the Giant Jackalope, in Dubois WY," which I now display in my office.

It was a funny break to our long drive that day to Jackson and the Tetons.

That's the same Jackalope we rode and photographed in Dubois in the 1980s -- though we don't recall the pile of Jackalope droppings. Looks like it has held up well after decades of service.
