In Newport News, Virginia, an accurate reproduction of the Union ironclad ship, the Monitor, was christened on June 11, 2006. The ship itself sank near Cape Hatteras on December 31, 1862. It was discovered in 1973, and its iconic round gun turret has been slowly undergoing preservation and restoration.
Artifacts from the actual shipwreck and arch-enemy ironclad, the Confederacy's Merrimack, have been exhibited at the museum. The anchor from the Monitor has been on display since 1998.
