Florida City, Florida: Southernmost Purple Martin House In The Continental USA

A fruit stand makes a claim for purple martin completists and foes of mosquitoes everywhere.

I made this a priority to visit while in the area and was thrilled to see (and try) several unknown varieties of produce from this busy shop. I tried one of the famous milkshakes and wandered through the grounds. I was challenged to find the "rainbow eucalyptus tree," and after walking by the Emus and tropical birds I found it near the fence bordering the property. I am sad, however, to report that the two Southernmost Purple Martin Houses are in need of some TLC.

Robert Is Here, home to the Southernmost Purple Martin Houses in the Continental USA, is a roadside fruit mecca that has been operating for more than 60 years. There are llamas and iguanas, live music, and lots of photo-ops (Key Lime Shakes - Avoid Scurvy). This is a must stop before or after a day in the Everglades.

I visited the Purple Martin site, and in addition to the birdhouses, the adjacent Robert Is HereFruit Stand is also fun to visit. A local tourist attraction itself, it has a small petting zoo, antique farm equipment on display, and unusually flavored milk shakes. Worth stopping by if you are in the area.
