Fort Humboldt was established on a bluff above Humboldt Bay in response to troubles between local Indians and white miners. Not long after the fort was established a young captain, U.S. Grant was assigned to the post. He found the constant rain and isolation unbearable and was said to have developed quite a thirst for whiskey during his posting at the fort.
