Marion, Kansas - Rhinoceroses of Marion, Kansas

Marion is everything a small-town stop should be - inviting green shady park with a statue of "Woody" the basketball player, excellent ice cream stand (the Big Scoop) right across the street, and dozens upon dozens of tiny rhinoceroses lining the streets. Rhinoceroses? Apparently, this town's Chingawassa Days celebration uses a rhino as its mascot, and so the town's merchants keep up the spirit by adopting small concrete rhinos, plopping them down all around the town, and decorating them in festive and fun ways.

[Richard C. Moeur, 07/16/2006]

When we asked if these were temporary installations, Richard added: "It's my understanding from chatting with the locals that these rhinoceri are perennials, and not annuals. "
