Rock of Ages Granite Quarry: Tours

Most of the granite for America's headstones comes from this part of Vermont. The Rock of Ages quarry covers 20 acres, and is the source for many of the odd funerary monuments we've visited, among them: NJ's Mercedes Benz gravestone, Barre, VT's Cemetery sculptures. There's a museum and a video theater that tells the story of granite. On a guided shuttle tour, you can peer down into the vast granite pits. Watch a sculptor creating a near-eternal memorial for another dead person, or try your skill on a granite bowling alley.

Small free granite specimens are for the taking.
