A bridge that actually floats on the water's surface. Closed in 2008; rebuilt and reopened in 2015.

Address:: Hwy 65, Brookfield, VT
Directions:: I-89 exit 4. East on Hwy 66 one mile to Randolph Center, then turn north. In about one mile there's a fork; Hwy 66 makes a sharp right, but go straight (north) on Ridge Rd. In about six miles there's a stop sign; turn left onto Hwy 65. In a few hundred feet it turns left onto the Bridge.

Floating Bridge

The rebuilt bridge was a bit disappointing. Floats well above the water. Can't even tell that it is a floating bridge. Was looking forward to it being a bit more "saggy" In the water. Still a neat thing to see.

The bridge is finally rebuilt and opened. What great job and view. The fishing is good and so is the drive.

We enjoyed the half-sunken and scary old bridge. But it's also good to have a safe Floating Bridge back.

Floating Bridge

The Floating Bridge has been pedestrian-only now for over two years. The official reason given for its abrupt 2008 vehicular closing was that it was unsafe, yet the Floating Bridge floats on. A bill has finally been introduced in the Vermont legislature to fix the bridge and reopen it to traffic, but the state still seems to be balking. It claims that the repairs would cost a prohibitive $2 million. Others say that's absurd, and that the bridge could be fixed for a tenth of that cost. Wood, nails, and a few weekends of volunteer labor should do the trick -- come on, Vermont!
