For 50 years the monorail -- or Upside-Down Train, as everyone I ever knew called it -- has been making holiday trips around Santaland on the 10th floor of the old downtown Portland Meier & Frank building.
Apparently 2005 was the final year. Macy's took over all of the Meier and Frank stores and chose not to keep our long-standing traditions. The monorail has been dismantled and a section of it will be on display in some new version of Santaland this year. There is no word on whether the "12 Days of Christmas" display windows, which always graced the windows of Meier & Frank, will still be used.
