Victorian House Atop a Factory

Penfield Mfg. Co. in Syracuse, New York. A local landmark. The little red Victorian house sits on top of the factory. It was a local mystery for years as to why a house was up there. The factory was a staple in the city, making therapeutic mattresses. The company closed its doors in 2005.

[Natalie Monteith, 12/03/2006]

Some details from a recent story in The Post-Standard: The factory was built in 1880 by H.A. Moyer. The 2 and a half story house on the roof, an "architectural gimmick," according to a 1937 newspaper interview with a Moyer family member, was never inhabited -- it contains elevator machinery and rafters.
