We -- Fran, Bill and Maria -- traveled to Newport specifically to see the fire truck on top of the pub. We had a great day motorcycling from NH (Maria) and Boston (Fran and Bill) and when we arrived and found the pub we were surprised to find that the fire truck had been removed. We were three years too late! We were told it was removed to keep the building structurally sound. The base for the truck and the truck itself were quite heavy. We did see a picture though and we stayed for dinner. The food was great and the staff personable.
[Maria, 07/18/2011]Atop the Brick Alley Pub is an actual fire truck placed there in 2001 to attract customers (though the business really doesn't need it -- they've been there about 30 years). Hoisted up by crane and welded into place, the old Newport fire truck is "a tribute to our local firefighters," according to Pub owner Ralph Plumb.
