Spring Green, Wisconsin: House on the Rock

An amazing place that starts with a house on a rock, but includes sprawling galleries of music machines, a sea monster, and excess amounts of everything. Plays a key role in American Gods.

House on the Rock

We just visited House on the Rock. I can't believe this thing has been sitting there for almost 50 years and I just now found out about it! House on the Rock, is without a doubt, the mecca of roadside attractions. I am now obsessed with the place.

It's actually more organized and professional than I was expecting. It's more like a museum than a crappy, deserted roadside attraction. However, the stuff inside puts any other quirky attraction to shame. Every one of the thousands of exhibits would be a decent roadside attraction on its own.

The price is now $28 to tour all three areas. We toured the first two areas (only a little cheaper), which consisted of the house and most of the other major exhibits. The third area is mostly the large collections. Although it's expensive, you can see that they put all that money right back into the house. I'm already looking forward to going back.

They're in the process of building a museum to honor Alex Jordan, the creator of the place.

We agree -- it's always been one of the "Seven Wonders of Roadside America" (since our first book).

House on the Rock - Sea Monster

House on the Rock: I've just started obsessively hitting every site you've listed, dragging my digital camera along with. This could overshadow my other hobby -- taking pictures of evil dunk tank clowns at carnivals.

House on the Rock

We saw what I now consider to be the Mecca of all roadside attractions since no other place I've ever seen has equalled it for sheer bizarro qualities. I'm speaking of House on the Rock, Spring Green, WI. Even your book's capable descriptive abilities cannot fully capture the fascinating weirdness, the strangeness, the absolute terror of the house and its collections. It was a monstrosity, it was a horror, and it was the best damned attraction I've ever seen!!

House On Rock Billboards Threatened

The smoldering powder keg that is Central Wisconsin tourism again exploded as a time-honored and historic billboard for House On The Rock (one of the Seven Wonders of Roadside America ) was disrespected, dismantled and discarded. As Susan Lampert Smith, supposedly an unbiased reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal wrote, "It was down with the big and gaudy and up with the small and tasteful Monday as workers changed a sign for House on the Rock along Highway 23."
