Bethel, New York: Woodstock Festival Monument

Stand and look over a field once filled with hippies. It happened in August 1969, nowhere near the town of Woodstock, a directional bane to generations of later tourists.

Woodstock Festival monument.

Woodstock Festival Site

The Woodstock Museum on Bethel Woods grounds is excellent and worth the $15/ person fee. If you're at the monument, there's a flat gravelly area downhill from it that was the location of the stage, bottom center to the large grassy "bowl." Museum is at the top. Free easy parking. Convenient facilities, too.

The slab appears to have been repainted many times in its relatively short life (for a slab, anyway). Vandals pry off paint chips as souvenirs.
