Doodlebug Train Horror Monument

There used to be an old bar in Cuyahoga Falls (not too far from the site of the Doodlebug accident) called Benito's that had several newspaper reports about the incident framed on the wall.

Many years ago, the Doodlebug, a gasoline-powered rail car, ran from Akron to Geauga Lake Park and hauled travelers to other destinations. On July 31, 1940 the train crashed into a 73-car freight train at Front Street and Hudson Drive and nearly all [43 of 44 passengers] were killed.

Recently some students from Falls High School took up a collection and did some research on the accident, and they had a plaque made to commemorate it. The plaque is in a park at Front Street and Bailey Road.

The Doodlebug Disaster battles the Ashtabula Horror as Ohio's most awful train wreck. It happened right next to a busy street, during evening rush hour. The collision ruptured and ignited the Doodlebug's gas tank, and most of the victims were immolated in front of horrified onlookers. "Most were burned to the seats and had to be removed using saws."
