Entering Leadville at first seems like any other faceless town on the map. But once in the historic downtown business district, it turns super cool. The Silver Dollar Saloon transports you back to the 1800s Wild West, and the Golden Burro Cafe takes you back to the 1950s. Be careful of your alcohol intake, the altitude will have a major influence on your being under the influence!

I walked the entire length of Harrison Ave. (Hwy 24) and looked for the welcome sign that notes the town's elevation and the statement "On top of it all," but it was nowhere to be seen. I did notice the large mural pictured on Roadside America and found several more murals depicting the town, its history, and the 10th Mountain Division. The downtown directional signs do include Leadville's elevation: 10,152 feet.

Cute old fashioned town. Good place to get some superlatives in (highest post office, highest craft brewery, highest marijuana dispensary...).

At 10,200 feet elevation, as the Leadville entrance welcome sign advises ("On top of it all."). Part of the Lake County.
[David Meznarich, 07/29/2010]Leadville is known as the "Highest City in America," and features the Glass Eye House (a home with a stained glass "All Seeing Eye of God"). The photo of the "On Top of it All" sign was snapped in 2010, and was looking a little weather-eaten even then. It gave the town's elevation as 10,200 feet, so perhaps Leadville has sunk 48 feet since then.
