Wolcott, New York: Venus Arising From the Sea
An odd sight in an otherwise no-nonsense downtown. Wolcott bought the colorful sculpture of the goddess, porpoises, and cherubs in 1913, and it still stands in the town's natural spring drinking fountain.

Venus Rising Sculpture
This statue of "Venus Arising From the Sea," along with her two cupids is in the middle of what used to be Wolcott's only stoplight. I believe it is close to 100 years old [there since 1913].
I never thought this was odd until my husband and I went back to the town I grew up in and he commented that the Village of Wolcott did stand out from other little places in upstate NY because of this statue. The statue itself is quite beautiful and oddly placed.
