Guns Into Plowshares in Washington DC.

Guns into Plowshares

Quite an impressive sculpture that makes one think about how many guns are out there. These guns were part of an amnesty program conducted by the Washington, DC, police department, and total an estimated 3,000 guns.

Guns Into Plowshares - New location

The "Guns Into Plowshares" sculpture is now on display at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA. It was moved there yesterday (9/19/2017) and installed near the university library.

[Brad Lehman, 09/20/2017]

Makes sense -- the artists that originally created the sculpture in 1995 were Mennonites.

Plowshare Made from Guns

I noticed a strange statue of a plowshare made from guns on D Street near Judiciary Square in Washington, DC.

[Bob Fulton, 10/02/1998]

February 2008: Judiciary Square was remodeled, and the Plowshare got replaced by a fountain. It now sits behind a fence in a maintenance yard across the highway from DC's sewage treatment plant. September 2006: Phil Pasquini sent a photo of the sculpture, partially blocked by some construction going on. July 2006: Tipster Jason sent some info on the sculpture. Mennonite artist Esther Augsburger and her son Michael created the 16-ft. "Guns into Plowshares" in 1995 by melting together 3,000 guns collected by the Washington DC police department in an amnesty program.
