Watson Lake, Yukon Ter., Canada: Sign Post Forest
Begun when a homesick soldier posted a "New Zealand 9000 miles" sign in 1944, the display now has nearly 100,000 signs winding through trees. Mute testimony that people in the Yukon often think of being someplace else.

Sign Post Forest
While researching our trip to Alaska, I read about the Sign Post Forest. I brought a Mountaineer sign from home and figured I might put it up if it seemed worthwhile. I had no idea what was in store!
It's hard to describe the Sign Post Forest. 80,000 previous travelers had left a piece of home in the beautiful but lonely outpost of Watson Lake, so we added one more for good measure. The full service, clean visitor center furnished a hammer and some nails for us to add our own piece of home.

This amazing attraction began during the construction of the famed Alaska Highway (AlCan) back in 1942. A lonely soldier from Danville, Illinois, working on the building crew, was so homesick for his hometown that he put up a Danville sign. From that point, others began adding signs.
Today there are over 60,000 signs! Wow! There is a great visitor center there as well.
