Nestled in the small town of Shirley IL Funk's Grove has been on an old brick part of Route 66 since it opened. They sell some of the best Maple "Sirup" around. Sirup has been spelled that way since the start of Funk (the spelling is protected by a trust set up by the late Hazel Funk Holmes)! This small, family-owned grove has a small store that sells sirup in all sizes, maple sirup candy made fresh daily, and a variety of Route 66 items.
When we stopped we had the chance to speak with "grandma," like the fourth owner of the grove; now her children and grandchildren run it. She was great and told us old stories of the Route, taking time to make suggestions on where to go on our journey. Route 66 is celebrated here and you will run into other road wanderers.
There is no "tour" of the grove available but, they did take us outside, show us a few trees and how they get the maple sirup out of them. They were really nice and let us walk around and see the current trees that were being tapped. There is also a display of how the maple sirup used to be made.
