Crazy Horse, South Dakota: Crazy Horse Memorial

The rock sculpture of Chief Crazy Horse is bigger than Mt. Rushmore. More than a head. Decades spent carving and blasting by generations, like the pyramids of old. And still not finished!

This is not a rip off. There is a very huge visitor center with lots of artifacts and information. Admittedly, there's a huge gift shop and restaurant as well. I found it very informative.

This place is a ripoff honestly. Just stop before you pay $28 to get in and take a photo. It is not worth it. Or maybe wait until they finish the memorial because Mount Rushmore is a better price and a way better thing to spend your time on.

One traveler's rip-off is sometimes another traveler's revelation. But you can skip the interior attraction and snap a distant telephoto shot before entering the property, though we don't recall any convenient spot along the entrance drive to pull off (since they don't encourage it).

For a closer view of the sculpture, take the 30 minute bus tour for $4. It takes you to the base of the mountain and also gives a view of the other side of the sculpture.

Tourist trap extraordinaire! You can see everything you need to see from the road/entrance, BEFORE you get soaked for the $10 a head entrance free. Once inside all there is to see is a gift shop and a 1/34 scale model and a cafe. No walking paths, and the closest you get is like 2 miles away. As of July 2013, all that is completed is the head, everything else is just a big rock with some spray paint on it to show where the horse head will be (in 20 yrs).

[Mike Richards, 07/05/2013]

As today's designated tourist trap apologists, we note that the viewing distance from the observation deck is about 1,000 yards, safely removed from active blasting underway on the mountain....if you're lucky enough to be there on a detonation day. But you can see the sculpture clearly before passing the admission gate.

The Chief Crazy Horse Memorial is amazing! We went to Mt. Rushmore and I thought it was pretty huge, but Crazy Horse is well, crazy! Go there and you won't regret it!
