Well, you can't actually gain entry into the outer portion of the facility any more. There are signs that say "No Trespassing" and that there are video cameras in use. You are still able to peek through open archways from the parking lot. A large portion of the event hall is now a really awesome music store. You can still get a feel for how grand the facility was previously, as there are tons of statues, cherubs and huge chandeliers among the instruments.

My husband Gerald Boley, now 90-years old, was a Master of the plastering and stucco trade in Pinellas County from about 1956-1974. I was having him recall the days when he created the ancient walls in the gardens of the Kapok Tree Inn. The owner, Mr. Baumgardner, was not able to find anyone who could replicate what he wanted, regarding the ancient walls, and my husband heard about it and went out there to discuss creating what Mr. Baumgardner wanted. Mr. Baumgardner had him do one section according to his description, so he could see if my husband could create what he wanted. Well, he was delighted with the results, and so Jerry went on to complete the job according to Mr. B's desire.

Kapok Tree Inn - a sight to see.

The restaurant closed in 1991, but much of the complex - including all of the original Kapok Tree garden - is still open to the public. See the insanely gi-normous Kapok Tree, many steps and columns, statues and fountains. Sam Ash Music now occupies the old Entrance Mall, Gift Shops, Gallery Room, and Patio Room. From their parking lot, you will see a sign for Kapok Special Events - this is the entrance to the Kapok Tree gardens. Still open, still beautiful in that ersatz European way.
