Colonel Mahlon Nathaniel Haines Dies - Oct. 31, 1962

Colonel Mahlon Haines, "The Shoe Wizard," had a house shaped like a shoe built in 1949 along the old Lincoln Highway. He never lived in it. Instead, he treated randomly selected customers at his shoe stores to a free week of living in the shoe, complete with a maid, cook, and chauffeur. Mahlon died on Halloween 1962, and although the Shoe House has since cycled through subsequent owners, it remains an attraction, and is open to the public for tours. Mahlon Haines wanted to be remembered, and as long as his Shoe House stands, he wiil be.

When you come around the bend and see the giant work boot, it's amazing. Cute $5 tour that was totally worth the trip!

I wanted to let people know that this place is still open. The owner is extremely nice. Our tour guide (on her third day of working there) shared a lot of wonderful information about the house and the man who built it. This house will amaze you. It is way bigger than it looks.

Don't forget to get some Shoe House ice cream.

The Shoe House tour is still just $5 [2015]. We had a great visit and a nice chat with the new owner, who is very friendly.
