Lava Links "Golf Course"

On the site where Soap Lake originally wanted to erect the World's Largest Lava Lamp is the most rustic "Executive" Par Three course you'll ever see. Sand for "greens" (Be nice, rake them after you putt) and absolutely no grass in the "fairways," which consist of sagebrush and rocks. Lots and lots of rocks. You can use nothing but a 9-iron, and you may want to throw it away after 9 holes, so buy one from a thrift shop. It's... different, like a lot of things in Soap Lake.

Rugged Terrain Golf Course

Lava Links is a ten acre, 9-hole, par 3, golf course located in the middle of Soap Lake, two blocks off of state highway 17. What makes the course so unique is that play is through, sagebrush, sand and desert vegetation. Grass is in short supply. Outcroppings of basalt provide an "x" factor. The greens are not greens -- they are grays (sand). You may tee up any shot other than a putt. For clubs, a wedge (nine iron) and putter are all that is needed. Some loaner clubs and balls are available.

The course is unattended You are on your own. Fees are not collected. Donations are requested. The course was created and maintained by volunteers. Dress for comfort -- Lava Links is the un-country club golf course.

While there are other "rugged terrain" golf courses, we wonder if many are "free." Soap Lake is the same town with a dream of erecting a giant Lava Lamp for tourism.
