National Training Center and 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Museum
- Address:
- Building 222, 1st St., Fort Irwin, CA
- Directions:
- National Training Center and 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Museum. Be ready for hot weather; summer temperatures reach 115 to 120 degrees. I-15 exit 189 (just east of Barstow) onto Fort Irwin Rd. Drive north for 38 miles on two-lane road. Don't exceed 55-60 mph; road is patrolled by MPs, the California Highway Patrol, and Barstow police. Also watch for "Tank Xing" signs -- all tanks have the right of way, and they're very fast (look for dust clouds rapidly approaching the road). Stop at the Information Center (first check point), show photo ID, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Tell the guard that you want to visit "the museum." The guard will call ahead. Drive to the second check point. Everyone in the car must show photo ID. Then follow the road to the only three-color signal that's working. Turn left on green. Stop at next three stop signs. At third stop sign turn right and look for the museum entrance sign. Turn right into parking lot.

The museum is currently closed for renovations as of 08 Nov 18. The construction workers told me it would open sometime in 2019. I recommend calling before you make the trip!
