On the east side of the road near Pepperwood, this carved ear of corn is a monument to the town which sits on a floodplain of the Eel River. That makes it a fertile place for growing produce sold at roadside stands. In 1964 a 100-year flood wiped out the town. The monument is a gift from the town of Fortuna, 17 miles north on Highway 101.
